Computing Women in IT Excellence Awards

The BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium was shortlisted for Diversity Project of the Year at the Computing Women in IT Excellence Awards! Hannah and I travelled down to London to attend the awards and represent BCSWomen and Aberystwyth University. We didn’t win, but had a great time anyway! There are some nice photos of the evening on Computing’s Facebook page.

Ada Lovelace: the first computer programmer

Ada Lovelace

Along with several brilliant and inspirational women in computing – Dr Hannah Dee, Dr Amanda Clare, and Dr Sue Black OBE – I was on the radio as part of the BBC Radio Wales Science Cafe’s International Women’s Day special look at the wonderful Ada Lovelace.

I was introduced as the new chair of the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium as of next year!

BCSWomen Lovelace 2016

This year, I travelled up to Sheffield to help out. The Colloquium was held at Sheffield Hallam Uni, with some help from folks at Sheffield University.

I was took part in a careers panel, representing the academic side of things, and was a general helper and photographer for the day.

BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium 2015

I’m very excited to say I’ve written a guest blog post for WITsend on Computer Weekly! http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/witsend/2015/04/the-bcswomen-lovelace-colloquium-2015.html

This is how the whole ‘I should really get around to starting that website I’ve been thinking about for years’ finally got off the ground. I had the opportunity to go along to this year’s BCS Women Lovelace Colloquium in beautiful Edinburgh. Two of my colleagues at Aber are long-time organisers, and were very awesome to let me tag along as a helper and photographer.

Both Edinburgh and the Colloquium were new to me, and I have honestly fallen head-over-heels for both. I wish I’d known about Lovelace when I was an undergrad, so I can only do my best to make sure that it’s great for our upcoming women in tech.

Next year will be in Sheffield… I will do my best to be there!
